Our
History

One evening, Gem and Lala decided to meet for dessert in a Rockville, MD restaurant. After ordering dessert from the menu, when it arrived at their table, it looked delicious; they couldn’t wait to taste it! When Lala attempted to place her fork into the dessert, it was stiff. As she tapped on it with her fork, Gem laughed while noting it was “hard as a rock”. It was clear to them the dessert was still frozen, so they told the waiter. The waiter took the dessert away, and returned to inform Gem and Lala there were no desserts that were defrosted, yet. Stunned, Lala asked if they actually made any desserts on-site, and was apologetically told the restaurant only sold frozen desserts that get defrosted the day they are served.

Disappointed, Gem and Lala walked out of the restaurant and started looking for other options. Surprisingly, there were no other options. All of the restaurants they entered confessed the same practice of serving mostly items that are stored and packaged frozen. By that time, it was almost 10:00 PM, on a Sunday evening; a time during which most restaurants were already closed or closing.

At that moment, Lala told Gem how it seemed there were no classic pastry bakeries nor restaurants from which they could just order a fresh and moist slice of cake or get a generic flavored cupcake; nothing too fussy or overly fancy. Gem agreed, and noted she wished there were options like that, too, especially anywhere along interstate 270. After that experience, Lala decided to search for traditional, fresh baked desserts and hoped there was a bakery that would deliver it to her home. She realized there was no option, especially not for delivery, which prompted her to open 270 Cakes bakery and dessert delivery service.
